Climbing 101

Ages: Minimum 16 years old

Climbing 101 is an introductory level class on climbing technique and terminology. At least one prior visit to Planet Rock is required before taking this class. It is recommended that new climbers complete our Starter Package prior to taking this class. This class is open to both top rope climbers and boulderers, as both types will have something to learn!

The goal of Climbing 101 is to provide a foundation for climbers to develop their individual journey without overwhelming them with an ocean of information. The focus is on principles and a launching point for understanding the sport of rock climbing.

  • intro to climbing hold types and shapes, and how to best hold them
  • into to flagging, footwork and hip positioning on the wall
  • intro to finding rest and increasing endurance on the wall
  • intro to route-reading (how to see the moves before you make them)

Anchor Building Theory

Ages: Minimum 16 years old

Want to Impress your friends and "wow" your family?! Ha ha, okay maybe that was a little overboard, but how else can we express to you the massive amounts of cool stuff you'll be learning in this ANCHOR BUILDING THEORY class? ANCHOR BUILDING THEORY gives you the knowledge and hands on experience to confidently set an anchor system in a variety of situations. You'll learn a bunch of different anchor types (for tree and bolted anchors) a slew of knots, and how to identify and choose gear.

How to Climb 5.11

Ages: Minimum 16 years old

Discover the art of climbing 5.11 with our technique-focused class tailored for experienced climbers. This course is designed to refine footwork, enhance route reading, perfect body positioning, and elevate grip skills. Students will delve into methods to boost strength, refine technique, and enhance overall climbing prowess, specifically geared towards tackling 5.11 routes in the gym.

The class kicks off with an insightful introduction and discussion on effective training and technique. The majority of the session is dedicated to hands-on climbing, with personalized 1:1 coaching from our expert instructors. Join us and elevate your climbing abilities to conquer the 5.11 challenge with confidence and skill!

Intro to Crack Climbing

Ages: Minimum 16 years old

In this class, students will learn the basics of hand and foot jamming, and how to climb hand cracks efficiently using our man-made wooden crack routes at each gym. Hand cracks are step one to becoming a proficient crack climber. Perfecting this technique will build a strong foundation for your new crack climbing obsession!

We’ll also show you the secrets to making quality tape gloves. Tape gloves are a game changer, btw.

Class Prerequisites:
Top-rope check completed and documented

Equipment Needed:
harness + climbing shoes
belay device
roll of athletic tape included in class fee
Intro to Crack Climbing is only available in the Madison Heights location.

Intro to Ice Climbing

Ages: Minimum 16 years old

In this class, students will learn techniques for smooth and natural ice climbing movements, how to best use tools and crampons, and the methods for climbing + belaying on ice. Students will get the opportunity to try out their new-found skills while climbing our 50′ wooden poles and special dry-tooling routes! Bring your harness – all other gear and equipment provided.

This class is offered at the Madison Heights location only.

Intro to Outdoor Sport Climbing

Ages: Minimum 16 years old

You're enjoying lead climbing in the gym. You're lead climbing 5.10's comfortably. You can lead belay and are 16 years or older. Maybe you've been climbing outside a few times with friends who are more experienced or a with a guide. But you want more. This is the class to take! Intro to Outdoor Sport Climbing is ideal for climbers who are already lead climbing in the gym and looking to start the transition into sports climbing outdoors. But this class is more than just learning the skills you need to safely and successfully climb outside (cue clipping, knots and route cleaning) it also covers the ethics involved in outdoor recreation. We love being outside and want to keep enjoying it in a responsible way.

Lead Lesson

Ages: Minimum 16 years old

So you want to learn to lead climb, huh?

AWESOME! Lead climbing is fun and challenging and exciting! And because it's also dangerous and takes strength and concentration, the first thing your instructor will do is make sure you are up to the challenge! be aware! There is NO refund if you don't pass the the initial evaluation, so make sure you meet all the qualifications that are listed below If you pass the initial eval, you'll proceed onto the lesson. You'll learn how to clip, fall, belay and climb lead routes in the safety of the gym and with an instructor supporting you the whole time (just like your favorite blankie or lucky penny ;) Once you've taken AND PASSED the Lead Lesson, you'll be ready to come in and pass the Lead Check the next time you come in and climb. And yes, you do need to pass the check in order to Lead climb in the gym. We throw a lot of knowledge and skills at you during the lesson and our top priority is safety, so we want to make sure you retained it all!

6HRS OF PLANET ROCK HECK

Ages: Minimum 16 years old

6 Hours of Planet Rock Heck isn’t just a climbing comp—it’s a full-on test of grit, teamwork, and endurance. Teams of two will battle it out to see who can send the most routes in six relentless hours of climbing. No shortcuts, no bailouts—just pure climbing stamina.

The 2025 showdown takes place Saturday, November 15th, 5pm–11pm at Planet Rock Madison Heights.

Here’s the deal:

  • Every route must be sent CLEAN—no falls, no takes.
  • Teammates must belay each other. (No swapping in friends—subs = DQ.)
  • Both partners need a current belay certification on file before registering.
  • Lead climbing is only allowed if both partners have passed their lead checks.

If you’ve got the endurance, the trust in your partner, and the drive to push through six hours of climbing madness, this is your night.

Train with the Team Night!

Ages: Minimum 18 years old

Train with the Team Night is an opportunity for Planet Rock members (18+) to climb alongside the Planet Rock Team, experience their training environment, and build a stronger community between gym members and team athletes. Come spend a day in the shoes of our nationally-recognized athletes and experience Planet Rock's world-class coaching first-hand.

This event is free to anyone with a Planet Rock membership, and included with the purchase of a day pass. Minimum age to participate is 18, and advanced registration is required!

Starter Package

Ages: Minimum 16 years old

Are you ready? This is the first step! If you're 16 or older and haven't been rock climbing before or don't know how to belay, then this Starter Package is for you. Over the course of the class you'll get a safety lesson that includes the basics of bouldering, how to belay (manage the rope for your climber) tie-in with a figure 8 (when you're the climber) and gym safety. This Starter Package comes complete with all the rental gear you'll need for the day, your safety lesson and a day pass to climb after you've completed the lesson. You're in for a great time and you'll have all the gear to do it! Speaking of gear, show up about 10 minutes before your lesson to get geared up (and bring or wear socks for the rental shoes). You also get a FREE DAY PASS to come back and climb (it's only good for a month, so be ready to plan your next visit).

Planet Rock offers Clip & Climb party bookings on select Saturdays throughout the year. Bookings are first come, first serve – so please plan ahead!

Cancellation Policy
Cancellations up to two weeks prior to the scheduled event are eligible for a full refund.
