9. Teen Boulder Passport

Guidance

This form should be filled out by parent/guardian of young climbers that have completed a Teen Boulder Induction or are a member of the TCA Performance Squad.

Unsupervised bouldering at TCA is permitted for those between the ages of 14 and 15 while the participant is demonstrating sufficient maturity and competence in performing the basic functions essential for safe bouldering. A duty manager or TCA instructor has the right to cease a bouldering session at any point if safe practices are not being demonstrated.

Where a child has been selected to the TCA Youth Squad, unsupervised climbing may be extended to those aged 12 and above.

Participation Statement

All climbing and bouldering activities have a risk of serious injury or death. Participants must be aware and accept that even if they follow all good practice there may still be the risk of accident and injury. It is the responsibility of the participant to adhere to the conditions of use.

The soft matting does not remove the risk of injury. Injuries can still occur even after dropping, with care, onto the matting but are more likely after an unplanned, uncontrolled fall. Participants should always be doing their utmost to avoid the risk of uncontrolled falls. This includes paying attention to how they will land and always assessing the risk of each climb that they undertake.

A youth climber is at a far greater risk of injury (than an adult climber) if they are landed on by another user, particularly if that user is an adult. Not all members (this includes adult members) are experienced boulderers and they will often climb beyond their ability resulting in an uncontrolled fall. Youth boulderers must make their own assessment of the risks whenever and wherever they climb and be aware of the activities of other users.
