Adult Bouldering League

Ages: Minimum 18 years old

Fridays, 6-8PM @ Peak RVA!
Cost: $40 per month

Peak's Adult Bouldering League offers a unique opportunity to amateur adult climbers of any age or skill level to experience group training and competition climbing in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Climbers in the Adult Bouldering League receive one 2-hour practice with a professional climbing coach per week. During this practice, your coaches will come prepared with a workout for you to perform as well as a weekly training theme! Themes can be anything from nutrition, to hangboarding, to sleep, to outdoor bouldering, and more. As a member of the Adult Bouldering League you will also have access to an ABL team Slack channel where every weekly workout will be posted (just in case you aren't able to attend). This is also a place for you to connect with other climbers, ask questions, and share your progress! Your coaches will always be available to answer questions about training during practice and will hold monthly office hours. Your coaches will also keep a calendar of all local competitions and encourage climbers to attend together! Read more about it on the Adult Bouldering League page of our website!

Note: this event acts as an add-on to an existing Peak Experiences membership. Anyone who signs up must have a Peak Experiences membership in addition to this weekly event-based membership add-on.

This clinic is designed as an indoor introduction to Lead Climbing and is structured to teach you everything you need to pass the Peak Lead Test. This class is great for any climber who has mastered top-rope belaying and is ready to unlock the rest of the gym by lead climbing!

Cost: $60 for members | $90 for guests

Number of Participants: 4

Additional Notes: Lead climbing is inherently more dangerous than top rope. Participants should be mentally and physically prepared to take on that risk.

Top Rope Belay certification at Peak is required for this class.

This class is for ages 16 and up. If you are between the ages of 13-15 and wish to take this class please email instruction@peakexperiences.com BEFORE signing up. Thank You!

2 Session Class

(2.5 - 3 Hours)

Session 2: Climbers will get learn to take and catch falls while lead climbing and further refine the skills from Session 1.
(2 Hours)

Gear and Rentals

Participants will need a harness, climbing shoes and a belay device for the class. It is recommended to take the class using the belay device you plan to mainly use to lead belay. If participants need any of this equipment, we have harnesses, shoes, and ATCs/Gri Gris for rent at the front desk.

Participants are welcome to use their own dynamic climbing rope if they have one. If not, no worries! Peak will provide dynamic climbing ropes for the class.

Lead Testing Info

Participants may take the Lead Test starting the following day after taking the class. We require waiting at least one day after receiving instruction before testing as this allows time to ensure that all the information from the class was retained.

No appointment is necessary for testing. Just let the front desk staff know upon arriving that you would like to take the Lead Test.

Participants may independently take the Lead Climb Only or Lead Belay Only Tests if they choose. Testing lead belayers will need someone to climb for their test. Climbers need to be already certified to lead climb or simultaneously testing.

Instruction - Level 3: Gym to Crag - Sport Climbing Outdoors

Ages: Minimum 16 years old

Description

There are some climbing skills exclusive to outdoor climbing, and we're here to teach you them in the controlled environment of our gym! Learn anchor building, route cleaning, rope management, outdoor etiquette and other skills needed to climb in the great outdoors! This class is taught in a 2-session course.

Cost: $95 for members | $140 for guests
Max Number of Participants: 4
Additional Notes: While this is a Gym to Crag class, as of now this class will be taught indoors at a Peak Experiences location.
Prerequisites: 16+ years of age. Lead Climb and Belay Certified at Peak Experiences or equivalent knowledge. Comfortable climbing grade 5.7.

This is an introduction to outdoor climbing and while it provides a solid foundation of knowledge, it cannot cover every scenario possible. Rock climbing is an inherently dangerous sport and there are more uncontrollable risks outdoors. Please exercise caution, but remember to have fun!

Gear and Rentals

Please bring your harness, belay device, shoes, and any personal climbing gear you would like to incorporate into the class. All outdoor specific gear will be provided for participants.

Anchor Building and Cleaning

This class will teach participants how to build anchors on a two bolt system and different variations one might find climbing in different areas.

Cleaning anchors teaches participants how to retrieve their gear from the wall using best practices. Participants will learn how to change over to lowering through a sport anchor and about other lowering options.

Outdoor Etiquette

Interest in climbing has exploded over the years and as climbing gyms are now the leading entry way into the sport, it is important that we do our part to teach best practices to protect access, promote ecological and environmental sustainability, and respect the cultural significance of the natural areas where we recreate.

This section of the class teaches basic LNT practices, encourages climbers to be respectful of other individuals' experience, and to learn the acceptable practices and local ordinances at each and every crag they visit.

Clip It or Whip It

Ages: Minimum 16 years old

Join us for the next installment of our "Clip It or Whip It" member challenge!

It's a friendly members-only lead competition that's more about your head game than how hard you can climb.

The rules of the game are simple:

  • All routes are climbed on lead
  • One try per climb
  • You have 4 hours to climb all the routes in your category

Scoring

  • 2 points for clipping the anchor without any falls or takes
  • Updated! If you fall on a route, you still get points! Simply count how many quickdraws were clipped prior to the fall and you get .2 points per each. For example, falling after 3rd = .6 pts and falling after 6 = 1.2 pts.
  • -1 point for calling for a take

This challenge is designed to encourage you to try that move and overcome the fear of falling. You'll be surprised how much harder and further you can climb once you just start going for it.

Divisions
When deciding which category to compete in, pick the level you can regularly climb without falls. Each category will have a variety of routes and grades that are designed to be range between a warmup to a slight challenge for the grade. Not sure what category is the right one? Challenge yourself and sign up for the harder category or ask for a second opinion from ryan@peakexperiences.com

The divisions break down as follows:

  • Recreational (can climb up to 5.10 on lead)
  • Intermediate (can climb up to 5.11 on lead) most will be here
  • Advanced (can climb up to 5.12 on lead)
  • Open (can climb up to 5.13 on lead)

Each division will have a marked selection of roughly 20 or so climbs to tackle, so don't forget to strategize your climbing!

There will be prizes for the top scorers and for everyone else, complimentary post-climb (or post-whip) beers from our buds at Väsen Brewing!

If you have any questions, reach out to Ryan Akens at ryan@peakexperiences.com

Pricing is $15 per climber and Clip It or Whip It shirts are available for pre-sale and day of for $20.

This should be obvious, but you must be lead-climb and lead-belay certified at Peak Experiences in order to participate.
