1 - Sport Climbing 201

Ages: Minimum 14 years old

Sport Climbing 201 covers the essential information required to lead and top rope bolted routes outdoors. This class takes place indoors with simulated anchors and situations to facilitate hands-on practice with expert instruction.

All participants must pass a Rock Spot lead climbing and belaying test at least 24 hours beforehand or be previously certified.

Topics covered include:

  • Crag ethics and etiquette
  • Outdoor hazards and risk mitigation
  • Gear features, inspection and maintenance
  • Installing and removing quickdraws
  • Use of personal tethers
  • Installing and removing anchors in a variety of situations
  • Transitioning to lower from a variety of bolted anchor types
  • Following on top rope with directionals for overhanging or traversing routes

The Sport Climbing 202 expansion brings the class outdoors to rehearse the same skills at a local sport climbing area, plus a few additional techniques and scenarios.

2 - Sport Climbing 202

Ages: Minimum 14 years old

Sport Climbing 202 reviews the 201 class material in an outdoor environment. After hands-on practice, a few additional topics will be introduced to help get you out of tricky situations that you may encounter.

Participants will be "mock leading" with a top rope backup while they practice. Expect to be tested on multiple anchor situations at the top of the climbing route under the direct supervision of the instructor.

Bouldering Tour

Ages: Minimum 6 years old

Join us for a tour and familiarize yourself with outdoor bouldering opportunities and best practices. We'll show you how to get to some of the more popular boulders, climb a few of the classic problems, and answer your questions about the area. Climbing history, ethics, and safety considerations will all be covered.

Lincoln Woods State Park, RI
Hammond Pond Reservation, MA

Participants will meet at the designated parking area by 9:45am before the tour starts at 10am. The walking tour will wrap up sometime between 11am and noon, followed by a brief climbing session afterwards. Climbing ends at 1pm.

No outdoor climbing experience needed, only climbing shoes (rental shoes included by request). Crash pads will be provided for use during the tour.

This outing is primarily intended as an informational session. It is designed for climbers who are looking for an introduction to bouldering outdoors, or for boulderers who are looking to expand their knowledge of the area. If you want to spend the entire time climbing on boulders specifically selected for you, work on specific climbing techniques, or find options that better fit your schedule, consider booking a Private Bouldering Session.

If you would like to return to boulder on your own in the future, consider renting a crash pad from one of the Rock Spot locations (https://rockspotclimbing.com/crashpad/).

Outdoor Experience

Ages: Minimum 4 years old

If you've ever wanted to give outdoor climbing a try, then this is the program for you! Rock Spot staff will provide all the necessary equipment and take care of anchoring the rope at the top of the cliff. The only thing you need to focus on is climbing and being outdoors! Recommended for all ages and abilities regardless of climbing experience.

Rappel 101

Learn how to rappel, a skill with many applications. Top rope belaying experience is strongly recommended.

Participants will learn how to descend from a top site anchor using a variety of safety backups.

While Rappel 101 can occasionally be found on the fixed schedule, it is most often set up as a private lesson so that the class can be tailored to your needs. To book a private lesson, please contact guiding@rockspotclimbing.com

Rumney Trip

Ages: Minimum 8 years old

Book a top rope tour and climb with us at the iconic Rumney Rocks climbing area in New Hampshire. Ropes will be set on multiple routes with staff available to assist. No lead climbing or belay experience is needed. There are only 9 spots for each session so register now before they fill up!

Climbing shoes, harness, and helmet will be provided to those who do not have their own. We recommend that participants are comfortable climbing at a 5.8 difficulty indoors to get the most from this trip.

If staying overnight, lodging is available at the Barndoor Hostel, American Alpine Club Rattlesnake Campground, and other places nearby.

Participants who have completed the Sport Climbing 201 and 202 classes may be able to practice skills during the Rumeny Trip at the instructor's discretion.

Top Rope Anchors 101

Establish or expand your outdoor climbing opportunities by learning to set up top rope anchors that utilize clifftop trees and boulders. Your instructor will discuss, demonstrate, and supervise while you gain hands on experience with basic anchor principals.

Topics include gear selection, inspection, route finding, top site safety, basic knots, anchor construction and anchor evaluation. Following this lesson, participants should then be able to build their own top rope anchors at many of our local climbing areas using basic techniques.
For comprehensive top rope anchor building skills, supplement with our other lessons including Self Rescue 101, Sport Climbing 201, Traditional Protection 101, Rappel 101, Top Rope Anchors 202, and Self Rescue 302.

Traditional Climbing Protection 101

Learn to inspect, install, evaluate, test, and retrieve traditional climbing gear such as wired chocks, spring loaded camming devices and more. Analyze the rock for strength, compatibility with different pieces of gear, and security of gear placements. Connect multiple pieces to form an anchor. This class is an essential foundation for climbers to build off of in Top Rope Anchors 202 (incorporate traditional gear into your top rope anchors when trees or bolts are not available), Trad 202 (follow a leader on traditional routes), and Trad 303 (lead traditional routes yourself, placing protection as you go).
